5 Things to Avoid Before Aesthetic Treatments

There’s a first time for everything. If you are new to aesthetic treatments and you’re doing some research into how to prepare for your first treatment, please read on!

Here are 5 things we always remind our own patients to avoid before doing any aesthetic treatments, including toxin and filler injections and light therapies like intense pulsed light (IPL):

  1. Alcohol acts as a vasodilator, meaning it opens up and relaxes blood vessels. This could potentially increase your risk of bruising after toxin or filler injections, so please avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after your treatment!

  2. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Diclofenac should also be avoided for 24 hours before your treatment as they act as blood thinners. If you are required to be on any medication long-term, please contact your healthcare provider before withholding medication.

  3. Excessive sun exposure & sunbeds should be avoided for at least a week, especially if you are planning to do any laser or light therapy treatments like IPL (intense pulsed light). And always remember to wear sunscreen daily with an SPF of 50 or above!

  4. TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) & other blood thinning supplements like ginger, gingko biloba, vitamin E supplements, turmeric and even some fish oils (that are high in omega-3 fatty acids). It’s best to stop these at least 24 hours before your treatment. Check your supplement to see if it contains any of these ingredients.

  5. ‘Active’ skincare products such as retinol, AHAs, BHAs and other whitening products should be stopped at least 24 hours before your treatment. And definitely let your healthcare provider know if you are on any oral retinol as there may be treatments that are not suitable for you!

In addition to the 5 things above, please also let your healthcare provider know if you have any chronic diseases, active skin infections, immunological illnesses or if you’re pregnant.
